Join us for a lively and interactive evening public program "A Night of Utopian Gestures" in conjunction with YBCA's newest exhibit With Out Reality There is No Utopia. "A Night of Utopian Gestures" will bring together a special presentation by Israeli artist Dana Yahalomi, the leader of Public Movement, a performative research body that investigates and stages political actions in public spaces; Michael Swaine, one of the founding members of Futurefarmers; FEMA, a national disaster management agency, Imagine Bus, Swap/Meet SF, MORDS, Free Utopian Projects and music by Snow Angel and Micropixie, with their mixture of trip-hop, indie-pop, folk, and North Indian classical music.
The evening will begin with a lecture by Dana Yahalomi, in which she will present her previous work, key strategies developed by Public Movement, and a discussion of identity and ritual which govern the dynamics of public life and public space. Upstairs in the Screening Room, Michael Swaine of Futurefarmers will lead a participatory performance, questioning and tangling the space between the performer and artist. Simultaneously, in the Grand Lobby, Swap Meet/SF will host a pop-up store front and Free Utopian Projects, Imagine Bus, FEMA and MORDS will also be hosting performative interventions and social sculptures that confront human agency.
